Malaysia Signs Astronaut Deal With Russia

More nations are relying on Russia to help get them to space

Russian officials have announced that Malaysia has signed a contract with Russia to send a Malaysian astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) next year.  Over 11,000 applications were received but two medics, a plane pilot and an engineer are the lucky candidates that may have the opportunity to travel to space.  Russian cosmonauts will narrow the choices down by selecting two candidates, with one being the primary candidate and the other a backup.  Both astronauts will then begin training at a Russian cosmonaut training facility for a September 2007 launch.  The deal between Malaysia and Russia is worth around $1B USD.  PhysOrg reports:

"Under the agreement, the Malaysian astronaut is to visit the ISS not only as a 'space tourist' but also as a participant in a research programme that is currently being worked out" by the two sides, the statement said.

Nations have had to rely on Russian spacecraft to get to space because the US remains grounded after the space shuttle Columbia disaster three years ago.  In much better news for the US space program, the space shuttle Discovery has been moved to the launch pad and should be ready to be launched sometime in July.
