Chicago Auto Show: hybrids on parade

The Chicago Auto Show is physically the largest auto show in the United States, with 1.2 million square feet of exhibit space. The show floor was home to 48 auto manufacturers showing off their latest productions and concept-car technology. But we were mostly impressed by the way this show put the range of hybrid-car choices into perspective.



The show floor

Following in the shadow of the North American International Auto Show in nearby Detroit, Chicago lacks some of the luster and breaking news of its more prestigious rival, but that doesn't cut into its ability to showcase just about every car for sale today and the technology within.




A hybrid truck?
GM has begun offering its Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups as hybrids. In this application, the gas engine shuts down whenever the truck is idling, coasting, or coming to a stop. Then when you tap the accelerator, the electric motor jump-starts the gas engine in a fraction of a second.




A more "powerful" hybrid
GM's hybrid pickups also use the technology in an unexpected way: The vehicle can double as a high-power backup generator, producing up to 2,400 watts of 120V AC power while idling. That's enough juice to run a lot of gear during a blackout. You tap into it via outlets in the bed of the truck.

"Escape" SUV gas-guzzling
Ford bills its Escape Hybrid as the first hybrid SUV. It uses the electric motor as a helper during start-and-stop driving, but the Escape never runs solely on the electric motor. The result is still about 36 miles per gallon in the city, which is pretty good for an SUV, albeit a small one.




Toyota gets it right
Among hybrids, Toyota's Prius continues to wow us the most with its sophisticated Synergy Drive drivetrain, its Bluetooth, its wireless smart key, and its voice-activated DVD navigation system. This car would be technologically impressive even if it weren't a hybrid.



It's all about Synergy
Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive is the most sophisticated on the market. It can power the car with either its electric motor, its gas engine, or a true blend of both. Toyota designed its hybrid drivetrain this way to achieve the least possible exhaust emissions. The Prius is an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV).



21st-century transmission
The Prius's drivetrain is so sophisticated that Toyota won't let you shift it yourself. The car comes with only a computer-controlled continuously variable transmission, or CVT, actuated via this rather dainty dash-mounted shifter. A CVT is a transmission with an infinite number of ratios, rather than the four, five, or six set ratios of a conventional transmission. That helps the Prius to keep its gas engine in the sweet spot of 3,000rpm to 5,000rpm at all times.

Honda's miser
Mildly reworked for 2005, Honda's Insight remains very different from the Prius. This aluminum-body two-passenger hybrid turns off its gas engine when idling and uses its electric motor only as a helper during acceleration. Driving it is a more conventional experience than with the Prius; it's available with either a manual or automatic transmission. As a five-speed, the Insight gets a stunning 60 miles per gallon in the city and 66 on the highway, making it the fuel-economy champ.




The hybrid paradox
Configured with an automatic transmission, the Honda Insight illustrates the hybrid paradox: better fuel economy in the city than on the highway. This is because hybrids rely heavily on electric motor assist--a power source that doesn't consume any gas--in city driving.

An uptown hybrid
Lexus calls its RX 400h the first luxury hybrid. It blends the company's RX 330 with the Hybrid Synergy Drive system from the Prius. Set to go on sale in April 2005, the RX 400h will offer fuel economy of 30 miles per gallon in the city, despite having a 3.3-liter V6 that delivers 268 horsepower. The really amazing number is torque: 3,500 pound-feet at launch, or approximately 15 times the amount offered by the conventionally powered RX 330.




A really upscale hybrid
Mercedes Benz will soon introduce perhaps the most unlikely hybrid: the company's flagship S-Class sedan. Its electric motor will be mated to a 340-horsepower diesel V8 engine. Mercedes will likely be able to claim the title of the most powerful hybrid. The car is expected to deliver around 34 miles per gallon when it debuts as a 2006 model.

อ่านแล้วคิดยังไงบ้างครับ ... เป็นเรื่องฉลาดมั้ย กับการใช้ไฟฟ้า ? เพราะในการใช้ไฟฟ้าเราสามารถเลือกแหล่งผลิตไฟฟ้าได้มากมายกว่าน้ำมัน .. อีกทั้ง ไม่ต้องมีการเตรียมการแหล่งพลังงานใหม่ที่คนไม่รู้จักอย่างพลังงาน Fuel Cell เหมือนพวกไฮโรเจนด้วย .....

สนหุ้นโรงไฟฟ้า กันบ้างหรือเปล่าครับ อิอิ ....

ไฟฟ้า ดีกว่า ตั้งเยอะครับ สะอาด แล้วก็ถูกกว่า

ถ้ารถ หันมาใช้ไฟฟ้าก็น่าจะดี แต่คงเปลี่ยน ระบบธุรกิจไปเลยนะครับ

ไม่แน่ใจเหมื่อนกันว่าวิ่งได้กี่กิโล แต่จำได้ว่าต้องชาทไฟบ่อยๆ

พวกนี้ เป็นลูกครึ่งครับ ไม่ใช่ใช้ไฟฟ้าล้วนๆ ... ผักครึ่งนึง อย่างอื่นครึ่งนึง .. เอ้ยยย ม่ายช่ายยย น้ำมันครึ่งนึง .. ไฟฟ้าครึ่งนึงครับ ... เค้าถึงได้เรียกว่า Hybrids ไงครับผม

ที่ US ตอนนี้ คนใช้เยอะขึ้นมากนะครับ แคมรี่ ที่โน่นก็มี Hybrids นะครับ ... แล้วถ้าคนใช้เยอะขึ้น Mass Production ได้เยอะๆ ต้นทุนก็จะลดลง ราคาก็จะลดลง ...

แล้วเมืองไทย ผมว่าคงตามเค้าแหละครับ พี่ไทยไม่เคยคิดเองอยู่แล้วครับ งานนี้อยู่ที่ว่าอเมริกา จะบูม แค่ไหนมั้งครับ ..

ตอนนี้ ที่น่าเรา คงมีแต่พวกรถในสนาม golf มั้ง ที่เป็นที่นิยมอยู่ ครับ

แต่รู้สึกจะเป็น bat ทั้งหมด นะ ไม่ใช่ hybrids

เห็นเค้าว่าใช้น้ำมันช่วงออกตัวแรกๆ
พอขับไปได้หน่อยมันก็มาใช้ไฟฟ้าแทน (มั้งครับ)
