RPC expects profits to grow by 12% this year
SIRIPHAN PONGTHANEE staff writer
Rayong Purifier Plc (RPC), a Thai diesel and solvent refiner, said it expects its profit to grow by 12 percent this year and plans to increase its production capacity by 10-13 percent from 12,000 barrels a day now due to the rising demand for oil.
The companys chief executive officer Supapong Krishanakan, pictured right, said the company will raise its production capacity on the growing demand for oil and the increased oil prices after the Oil Producing and Exporting Countries (Opec) group decided too lower its production capacity.
Crude prices currently are hovering around US$38 a barrel.
However, should the company be able to find more crude, it will be able to run the production process at its full capacity of 17,000 barrels a day.
Last year, the company made eight billion baht in revenue and 235 million baht in profit. The company expects to pay dividends for the second half of 2003 at one baht per share.
Moreover, RPC will further invest to expand its retail oil stations and construct a small petroleum and petrochemical plant (VTN-P) in Can Tho, Vietnam.
Such a project will need $8 million in financing and the capacity of the plant will be 2,500 barrels per day. The company, however, expects to hike capacity to 50,000 barrels in the future in case of increasing demand.
Currently, the company is in the process of applying for a licence to operate more stations in Vietnam, aiming at boosting its market share to 60 percent from 20 percent. The refinery is expected to be finished by 2005.
If running at full capacity, RPC will be able to boost its income to around 62-75 billion baht a year.
Although it is risky to invest in Vietnam due to legal uncertainty and different regulations, the company can get pass those difficulties as we have a good local partner and we hedged our risks by investing in a small refinery at first said Supapong. If the growth trend is bright, we will increase capacity to 50,000 barrels a day.
Suwinai Suwanhirunkul, RPCs managing director, said it has established the RPC Asia company, which will be in charge of exporting and searching for fresh oil markets overseas such as in Cambodia, Vietnam and China. This plan will generate more income for the company in line with the governments policy to promote Thailand as the energy trading hub of the region.
By setting up the plant, the company will gain benefits from tax incentives. Formerly, the company had to pay a corporate tax of 25 percent, but now it will be reduced to 10 percent of its net income.
Even though, the company suspended manufacturing to perform annual machinery checking on January 21 to February 19, 2004, the stopover will not affect the companys revenue because RPC normally has spare stock for selling when it temporarily stops operating.
RPC on Friday closed down 1.55 percent at 31.75 baht.
