Schoolboys won't be charged for forest fire

POLICE will not hold six primary schoolboys accountable for starting a forest fire in southwest China's Yunnan Province, the province's investigators said yesterday.

The boys are fifth-graders at Longquancun Primary School in Xiaguan Town of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, said the chief of Dali's forestry police.

One of the boys is 12 years old and the others are 11. Since they haven't reached the legal age of responsibility they will not be charged, but their school officials will be investigated for civil liability.

The forest guards and officials of Xiaguan Town will also be penalized, said Li Xiong, vice governor of Dali and vice commander in chief of the fire fighting battle.

The boys were playing on a mountain at the back of a temple on the afternoon of March 8.

Reportedly, one boy surnamed He lit some grass with a lighter and lost control of it when the wind began to blow, which ignited the grass in the area and started the uncontrollable blaze.

"My friends ran to the temple for help, so they could call the police. I tried to put out the fire with some nearby branches," said He. "But the fire spread so quickly and I couldn't stop it."

The fire engulfed a forest reserve near Mount Cangshan and spread over 233 hectares.

More than 10,000 people, including army personnel, forestry police, fire crews and local residents, joined in the extinguishment that took three days.

The Cangshan and Erhai National Nature Reserve covers nearly 80,000 hectares and is one of the most famous scenic spots in Yunnan.
