FBI to pull plug on infected computers Monday

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Thousands of people with infected computers will lose Internet access on Monday after the Federal Bureau of Investigations shuts down servers keeping that access on life support.

In November, the FBI arrested six Estonian nationals and charged them with infecting millions of computers with a virus that manipulated the Internet address system to force users to fraudulent websites. More on FBI operation.

About 4 million computers worldwide were infected although that number has fallen to less than an estimated 500,000 currently.

A malicious malware bug will kick thousands of computers off the Internet come Monday.

Since the infected computers were reliant on the Estonian servers to connect to the Internet, the FBI arranged to have temporary servers support the machines to give users with infected machines time to clean the virus from their computers.

The agency also set up a website for users to find out if their computer was one of the ones infected with the virus. Find out if your computer is infected. http://www.dcwg.org/

The court order allowing the FBI to set up the temporary servers expires at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on Monday.
